Racehorses

Racehorses in a Landscape by Edgar Degas

Racehorses

Rainbow-arrayed vests
at ease while sleek-legged mounts
scratch hooves on rough grass
while groaning rhythmic drum beats
twisted round pent-up fury.

  1. I can't help but think of the irony in this painting. I'm sure that most racehorses get to see the pasture, especially after their careers are finished, but I wonder how many would choose to race if given the choice. I love to watch the Derby, but watching that fillie lose her life on the track sickened me. Nonetheless, you captured the spirit of the painting in your words... nicely done. Thanks for sharing it with us.
