The Gossip

Portrait of a Woman in a Large Hat
by Amedeo Modigliani

The Gossip

Her hat halos round her brain
of sizable dimension
which she was sure to mention
in a high-pitched pensive strain.

Lady's long neck telescope
spied gossip here, here, and there,
pencil neck extraordinaire.
Unrequested interlope.

Erase truth, write juicy tales.
Mold and press and sculpture well,
enhancing stories to tell.
Spread false words when all else fails.

She's a genius, don't you know?
Ascertaining insight rare,
soothsayer extraordinaire,
Lady gossip, seeds to sow.

  1. Excellent! I just keep looking at her and going blank!

  2. I just left myself a note reminding me not to ever make you mad.

    Oh, wait... too late. LOL

Good one, Jo... it captures the attitude implicit in the painting.

  3. She is SOOOO catty. Fun read.

I admired Modigliani's work to the point of one time trying to imitate him. I just as well have tried to imitate Beverly Sills singing La Traviata. No, I'm quite content to be, just me. Your words capture the lady's assurance of herself: don't mess with me?

  5. I agree with Ozzy; very catty and haughty; perfectly captured. Nice job, Jo.

  6. Yeah, the pencil neck gives her away and your language and style capture so much. thanks for this.

Your poem complements the picture to a T. It's not possible to improve on your word choices either. Such an air of superiority *sniff* yes..? I loved reading it!
